On January 21, 2010, PLSN will have its meeting at The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center where the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act (MOSIRA) will be discussed. MOSIRA was originally debated in the Missouri Legislature in 2003, and again in 2009, but this year appears poised for final passage. Indeed, Governor Jay Nixon is including MOSIRA in his First Initiative, a "comprehensive legislative proposal designed to get Missourians back to work, educate Missourians for the careers of tomorrow and harness innovation and technology to revolutionize government and business." Please join PLSN at 7:30 AM at the Danforth Center located on the corner of Olive and N. Warson Road in Creve Coeur -- 975 N. Warson Road, St. Louis, MO 63132.
July 17, 2009 - STARS Annual Commencement Ceremony
Students and Teachers As Research Scientists (STARS) is a program that Ken Mares and Chuck Granger started at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. funded partially through Pfizer, Inc.; LMI Aerospace/D3 Technologies; Office of the Chancellor of UM-St. Louis; Saint Louis University; Washington University; Green Foundation; and Solae Company. It introduces both rising high school juniors and seniors and teachers to the various aspects of the scientific enterprise as practiced by successful scientists in academic, private, and governmental research institutions.
High potential, secondary school students and science teachers have the opportunity to participate in research projects in anthropology, astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or psychology at one of the collaborating research institutions: Saint Louis University, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Washington University, University of Missouri-St. Louis, or Donald Danforth Plant Science Center.

July 10, 2009 - Washington University’s Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies -- Technology Commercialization Panel Discussion

Skandalaris Center subsidized internships were first offered at Washington University in Summer, 2002, through a program subsidized by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The Center's internship program was significantly enhanced in the summer of 2008 with a $1 million gift from Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Skandalaris. The gift enables the Center to pay a stipend to student interns and provide room and board for them on campus for the 10-week internship. The only cost to a first-time sponsoring organization is a one-time payment of $1,000 due at the start of the internship. (An organization may hire a second intern for the full cost of $6,000, but only a limited number of these full-cost internships is available.) The enhanced program provides for a rich learning and on-campus living experience for undergraduate students. Students work at their internship Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, interns attend lunch and an afternoon session to learn how to start, develop, and sustain new enterprises. Ventures sponsoring interns and guest entrepreneurs from the community participate as panelists in the Friday sessions, concluding with a social hour for the interns to interact and connect with the guests. These Friday after-lunch sessions are free and open to the public.
In 2008, the first summer of the new program, 22 undergraduate students representing each of the University's four undergraduate Schools and Colleges interned with eighteen St. Louis-based entrepreneurial ventures. These students were significant contributors to the host organizations with CEOs commenting that their Skandalaris interns were pivotal in moving their organizations forward. Several companies even offered students extended internships and full-time employment.
For more information, please visit the Skandalaris Center summer interns site and review opportunities to learn from the interns during their Friday events.
March 13-15, 2009 - Darwin Days at the University of Missouri
The 2009 Life Sciences & Society Symposium commemorates Darwin's 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species. The interdisciplinary weekend event is free and open to the public. "Darwin's Ongoing Revolution" will provide a rare opportunity to explore the way evolutionary thought continues to reshape existing fields and create new ones in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Seven international speakers, representing the leading edges of new fields, will address new directions in research, new challenges to traditional disciplinary boundaries, and public perceptions of the (expanding) role of evolution.
